The Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected claims that the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara is being driven by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, the Assembly’s spokesperson, Enemi George, said lawmakers were acting strictly within the bounds of the Constitution and not at the prompting of any political actor.
George warned against conflating political affiliations with constitutional responsibilities, arguing that such a merger would undermine democratic institutions.
He said suggestions that the legislature was acting on the instructions of Mr Wike were unfair and diminished the independence of the House.
"The FCT minister is a politician. If we begin to mix politics with constitutional matters, we will begin to cause trouble.
"It is insulting to reduce the activities of an institution created by the Constitution to an individual," he said.
While acknowledging his personal political alignment with Wike, the spokesperson insisted this had no bearing on the Assembly’s actions, stressing that his role was institutional rather than partisan.
George maintained that the impeachment proceedings were not politically motivated, adding that the governor was accused of breaching several constitutional provisions.
He also rejected allegations of budget padding and claims that legislative work had been stalled, describing the accusations as unfounded.
