Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, are mourning the death of one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi.
It was said that the 21 months old Nnamdi passed away on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, following a brief illness.
The news was confirmed in a statement issued by Adichie’s communications team and signed by Omawumi Ogbe, shared exclusively with The Guardian.
Describing the loss as “devastating,” the family appealed for privacy during what they called an “incredibly difficult time.”
They also requested prayers and understanding as they grieve privately, emphasising that no further statements would be released.
The statement concluded with thanks to the public and the media for respecting the family’s need for seclusion.
Adichie, acclaimed for works including Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah, and Purple Hibiscus, is one of Africa’s most celebrated literary voices.
