The Federal Government has inaugurated a Joint Implementation Committee to oversee the training and certification of one million Nigerians in digital literacy and emerging technology skills, a move aimed at fast-tracking the country’s digital transformation.
It was said that the committee was inaugurated on Tuesday in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who was represented by Ibrahim Kana, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Office of the SGF.
Speaking at the event, Akume said the initiative was a key step in the government’s strategy to deepen digital literacy, strengthen human capital development and promote inclusive participation in the digital economy.
He said the programme aligns with Nigeria’s Digital Transformation Agenda, the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with a target of achieving at least 95 per cent digital literacy by 2030.
Akume clarified that although the programme enjoys the backing of federal institutions, it is fully funded and implemented by Clergywealth Cooperative Society Limited.
He added that the initiative builds on resolutions reached at the 13th National Council on Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy meeting held in December 2025.
According to him, those resolutions included the adoption of the Future Proof Economy (FPE) model as the national framework for delivering digital literacy and emerging technology skills across the country.
The committee is expected to provide leadership, oversight and stakeholder coordination for the nationwide rollout, with priority given to youths, women, underserved communities and persons with disabilities.
Akume said the committee’s mandate includes planning and coordinating a National Digital Literacy Conference, providing strategic oversight for skills training under the FPE model, ensuring alignment with national policies, and coordinating engagement with ministries, departments and agencies, state governments, the private sector, academia, development partners and civil society organisations.
It will also be responsible for establishing monitoring, evaluation and reporting mechanisms to track progress and outcomes.
Membership of the committee cuts across the Office of the SGF, the federal ministries of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy; Education; Youth Development; and Information and National Orientation, as well as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), state representatives, ICT professionals and civil society groups.
Akume described the committee’s role as critical to improving workforce readiness and supporting sustainable and inclusive digital growth across Nigeria.
