President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a man of “quiet strength, discipline and enduring grace,” whose legacy of integrity would continue to shape Nigeria’s public life.
Tinubu spoke on Monday at the launch of From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
He said Buhari’s reputation for modesty and personal restraint stood out in an era often defined by power and privilege.
“The measure of a leader is not simply the offices he held or the motorcades that accompanied him. It is what persists when the sirens fall silent,” Tinubu said.
According to the President, Buhari left behind a belief that public office should be treated as a trust rather than an opportunity for personal gain, a principle he said would continue to inspire Nigerians.
Tinubu also reflected on his political journey with the former president, recalling their role in building the coalition that secured the historic 2015 presidential election victory.
He revealed that the alliance formed in 2014 had since evolved into what he described as Africa’s fastest-expanding political party.
The President commended the biography for offering a balanced account of Buhari’s record, including both achievements and shortcomings, saying it should serve as a guide for future leaders rather than a collection of political slogans.
He described Buhari as a consistent patriot whose personal honesty was acknowledged even by critics, adding that their partnership underscored the importance of cooperation across political and personal differences.
“Nation-building demands that we compete passionately and govern responsibly. In his memory, let us keep our politics honourable and our governance focused on results,” he said.
