The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched formal investigations into alleged misconduct by players, officials and media personnel during two high-profile quarter-final matches at the ongoing TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, the continental football governing body said it had reviewed match reports and video footage from the fixtures involving Cameroon and host nation Morocco, as well as the clash between Algeria and Nigeria.
The evidence, CAF said, pointed to “potentially unacceptable behaviour” by individuals associated with the teams.
“CAF has collected recent match reports and video evidence indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials and has opened an investigation into match incidents,” the statement read.
The cases have now been referred to CAF’s Disciplinary Board, which will determine whether any breaches of conduct occurred and recommend appropriate sanctions.
CAF stated that any individuals found guilty of wrongdoing would face disciplinary action.
In addition to the on-pitch incidents, CAF confirmed it is also examining footage of an alleged altercation involving members of the media in the mixed zone area following one of the matches.
The nature of the incident has not been disclosed, but the body said it is treating the matter with equal seriousness.
Further stressing its commitment to upholding the integrity of the tournament, CAF condemned all forms of misconduct, particularly those targeting match officials or tournament organisers.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers.
“Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events,” the statement continued.
The developments come as AFCON 2025 enters its final stages, with heightened scrutiny on player discipline and tournament management.
CAF has not indicated when the Disciplinary Board is expected to deliver its findings.
