Nigeria’s Super Eagles marched into the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening with a resounding 2–0 victory over Algeria at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, setting up a tantalising last-four encounter with hosts Morocco.
Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams struck within ten second-half minutes to dismantle a previously resolute Algerian defence that had conceded just once in the tournament prior to this quarter-final clash.
The breakthrough came moments after the interval. In the 47th minute, Osimhen rose imperiously to meet Bruno Onyemaechi’s inch-perfect cross, thundering a header past Luca Zidane to notch his fourth goal of the competition.
Nigeria’s second was a testament to their attacking fluency. Alex Iwobi, pulling the strings from midfield, carved open the Algerian backline with a sublime outside-of-the-boot pass.
Osimhen, rather than going for goal himself, unselfishly squared the ball to Adams, who coolly rounded Zidane and slotted home to double the advantage.
The scoreline reflected Nigeria’s dominance. From the outset, José Peseiro’s men controlled possession and dictated the tempo, carving out several chances in a first half that saw Algeria’s Ramy Bensebaini twice clear off the line to keep the Desert Foxes in contention.
Algeria, for their part, struggled to gain a foothold. Despite second-half introductions including Baghdad Bounedjah, they failed to register a single shot on target, a testament to Nigeria’s defensive discipline, marshalled expertly by Calvin Bassey.
Wilfred Ndidi’s booking was a rare blemish on an otherwise assured performance, and with a semi-final looming, his availability may be under scrutiny.
However, the Super Eagles’ depth was evident, with late substitutions, including the lively Moses Simon, helping to see out the match with composure.
The result sends Nigeria into a high-stakes semi-final against Morocco, a fixture already billed as a potential classic.
With their attacking unit firing and confidence at a high, the Super Eagles appear well poised to challenge for a fourth continental crown.
