Bayelsa Police Arrest Officers over Viral Assault Video

Two police officers in Bayelsa State have been arrested after a viral video showed them allegedly assaulting a tricycle rider during a roadside stop, the state police command has said.

The footage appears to show uniformed officers stopping a tricycle operator and demanding his driver’s licence, but the encounter escalated after the officers seized one of the vehicle’s tyres.

In the video, the rider is seen attempting to retrieve the tyre before being pushed to the ground and struck repeatedly by the officers.

Following widespread public reaction, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, ordered the immediate arrest of the officers involved and directed that disciplinary action be taken.

The officers involved have been arrested and disciplinary proceedings have since commenced in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act and other extant regulations,” the command said in a statement.

The police described the conduct as unacceptable and contrary to professional policing standards, stressing that such behaviour is not tolerated within the command.

Furthermore, the statement stressed that the commissioner had reiterated the command’s commitment to the protection of citizens’ rights and safety, while ensuring lawful and professional policing across the state.

Police authorities said investigations into the incident are ongoing and that the outcome would be made public upon completion.
