Troops of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have rescued four kidnapped civilians during a waterborne operation in Bakassi, Cross River State.
The rescue was carried out on Tuesday, 2 December, and later confirmed in a statement released via the Army’s X handle and signed on Wednesday by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations for the brigade, Major Yemi Sokoya.
According to the statement, the soldiers were on a routine water patrol when they encountered militants transporting the abducted civilians in a speedboat towards Isangele, Achibong, in neighbouring Cameroon. The suspects were said to have opened fire on sighting the patrol team.
The troops returned “accurate and superior firepower,” forcing the gunmen to abandon both the victims and their belongings before escaping into surrounding creeks.
All four victims were rescued unharmed, and no soldier was injured, the statement added.
Brig Gen PO Alimikhena, Commander of the 13 Brigade, praised the soldiers for what he described as their courage, vigilance and commitment to duty.
Alimikhena said the operation revealed the brigade’s readiness to dismantle criminal networks operating within coastal and riverine communities.
The Army added that it remains committed to safeguarding residents of Cross River State.
In a broader development, the military announced it conducted nationwide operations between 29 November and 1 December, during which eight terrorists were killed, 51 suspects arrested, 27 victims rescued and various weapons and illicit items recovered.
