Fresh Kidnap in Kwara as Community Recovers from Previous Abductions

Banditry struck once more in Eruku, Ekiti Local Council, Kwara State, on Sunday, just days after 38 worshippers of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Oke-Isegun were released.

A farmer, Annas Aasanru, 40, was abducted from his farmland along Koro Road, according to the Kwara State Police Command.

Spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed that four armed men, reportedly wielding cutlasses and AK-47 rifles, invaded the farm around 12:30 pm.

Police, military personnel, and local vigilante groups were immediately dispatched to the scene for a search and rescue operation.

All necessary efforts are underway to secure the return of the abducted victim,” SP Ejire-Adeyemi said.

Community leaders described the attackers as suspected Fulani/Bororo men who fled into the bush after the abduction.

Meanwhile, Oba Kamilu Salami, the Ojibara of Bayagan in Ifelodun Local Council, who had been kidnapped last Saturday alongside six others, reportedly escaped from his captors on Sunday evening.

Palace sources indicated that the traditional ruler and the others fled during a violent confrontation between bandits and local vigilantes in the EkuIdaji area near Igbaja.

Earlier on Sunday, the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N150 million from the community before releasing the monarch.

Sources confirmed that the escapees have made contact with the community to report their safety, though they have yet to return home.

Nigeria Moves Away from Borrowing

The federal government has unveiled a great shift in Nigeria’s fiscal strategy, moving away from heavy reliance on borrowing towards the mobilisation of mass domestic savings as a sustainable response to the nation’s rising debt burden. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, disclosed the new approach during an interactive session on the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), hosted by the Senate Committee on Finance at the National Assembly. Edun said the policy pivot was essential in light of persistent revenue shortfalls, mounting fiscal pressures, and the need to strengthen domestic capital formation without further swelling public debt. According to the minister, Nigeria’s total public debt has soared to around N152 trillion, up from approximately N70 trillion in 2023, but a large portion of the increase did not stem from new borrowing. He explained that N30 trillion arose from the formal recognition an...
