Yuletide: FCT Police Warn Residents Against Firecrackers

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has warned residents against the sale and use of firecrackers, knockouts, and other unauthorised pyrotechnics as the festive “Ember months” gather pace.

In a statement issued on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said officers had observed an “increasing circulation” of fireworks across the territory, describing the trend as a public safety risk.

Firecrackers pose serious safety hazards, including injuries, fire outbreaks and widespread panic.

“They also create opportunities for criminal elements to mask unlawful activities. Beyond these risks, their indiscriminate use disrupts public peace and endangers vulnerable members of the community, particularly children, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions,” the statement read.

Residents were urged to comply with the directive, while operatives across the FCT have been instructed to enforce the ban and prosecute offenders.

The command also encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and report anyone involved in the sale or use of fireworks.

Police authorities in Imo and Plateau states have recently imposed similar restrictions ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations, citing fears over injuries, fires and general disturbances during the festive period.
