NiMet Deploys Electric Vehicles at Five International Airports

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has introduced electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations at five international airports across the country.

The airports affected include Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano, Port Harcourt International Airport, and Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.

In a statement released Tuesday, NiMet spokesperson Elioenai Anzizi said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which included clean energy, innovation, and climate resilience.

Each airport will be equipped with dedicated EV charging stations and that the vehicles are designed to travel up to 200 kilometers on a single charge.

Anzizi said the deployment is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce downtime caused by fuel supply issues, and lower maintenance and fuel costs.

He added that the move will also help NiMet meet national carbon credit targets and global sustainability benchmarks.

The agency credited the initiative to the leadership of its Director-General and CEO, Prof Charles Anosike, who has prioritized innovation and environmental responsibility in NiMet’s operations.

"Beyond advancing environmental goals, the introduction of electric vehicles will significantly enhance NiMet’s operational services

"The quiet and efficient EVs will facilitate smoother airside logistics, reduce downtime linked to fuel supply challenges, and cut operational costs, all of which contribute to more reliable, timely, and energy-efficient service delivery

"By minimizing emissions and maintenance demands, NiMet can channel more resources into its core functions of weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and aviation safety.

"Under his leadership, NiMet continues to drive forward-thinking initiatives that not only modernise its operations but also strengthen its role as a key player in advancing green growth and environmental responsibility within the aviation sector," the statement read.
