Nigeria Launches Nationwide Diabetes Screening Programme with Locally Made Kits

Nigeria’s first homegrown manufacturer of blood glucose monitoring systems, Colexa Biosensor Ltd, has partnered with the Federal Government to roll out a nationwide diabetes screening and capacity-building programme, utilising locally produced diagnostic kits.

The initiative officially began yesterday in the North-Central geopolitical zone with the training of government health officials at primary healthcare centres (PHCs). It is set to expand nationwide, targeting five million Nigerians across the country’s 774 local government areas.

As part of the programme, more than 77,000 units of Colexa Biosensor’s OnPoint Blood Glucose Monitoring System, manufactured in Lagos, will be distributed to individuals diagnosed with diabetes during screenings. Each PHC will also receive diagnostic and monitoring devices to support ongoing community-level care.

Dr Alayo Sopekan, National Desk Officer for Diabetes at the Federal Ministry of Health, described diabetes as one of the fastest-growing health challenges in Nigeria, stressing the urgent need for early detection and monitoring.

Colexa Biosensor’s Managing Director, Kingsley Aguoru, said the collaboration shows the government’s confidence in local manufacturing capabilities.

He restated the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality diagnostic tools to improve early detection and long-term management of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

The programme aligns with the Federal Government’s wider medical relief agenda, aimed at reducing the cost of essential health commodities, improving affordability, and strengthening diagnostic services nationwide.

Training and screening exercises will continue across all six geopolitical zones in the coming weeks.

In a related development, the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) announced a statewide free HIV testing campaign from 18 November to 1 December 2025.

Scheduled across all local councils and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), the initiative forms part of activities marking the 2025 World AIDS Day.

Dr Folakemi Animashaun, Chief Executive Officer of LSACA made known the importance of early testing in advancing public health objectives, aiming to close existing testing gaps while promoting community awareness on HIV prevention, care, and stigma reduction.
