Tinubu Pledges Youth-Focused Reforms in Meeting with Duke of Edinburgh


President Bola Tinubu on Monday reaffirmed that his administration’s economic and institutional reforms are aimed at equipping Nigerian youths with globally competitive skills.

The President made the statement while receiving the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, at the State House in Abuja.

Prince Edward, Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, is in Nigeria to brief the President ahead of the upcoming award ceremony in Lagos.

Tinubu said young people remain central to his economic agenda and that their involvement in ongoing reforms will help propel Nigeria toward a more prosperous future. 

"We are adopting global best practices to explore opportunities across multiple skills sectors," he said.

Citing education initiatives, the President pointed to a special loan fund to ensure students can complete university, describing education as a key tool for reducing poverty. 

He also mentioned infrastructure projects, including fibre optic deployment, as a means to expand access and improve youth inclusion in national development.

On security, Tinubu said measurable progress is being made and thanked humanitarian agencies supporting victims of terrorism.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun stated that Nigeria’s median age is 17, stressing that the reforms are structured to provide opportunities for skills development, participation, and economic growth.

Prince Edward commended the government’s reforms and announced that 320 Nigerian youths will be honoured at the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award events in Lagos, supported by the Lagos State Government.

The Duke was accompanied by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Sir Richard Montgomery; His Royal Highness’s Private Secretary, Alex Potts; the Foundation’s Secretary-General, Martin Houghton-Brown; and International Trustee and Chair of the Africa Region, Muhoho Kenyatta.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global non-formal education programme that empowers young people to develop skills, resilience, and a spirit of service through schools, youth organisations, and community groups worldwide.
