Former Manchester United and Portugal winger Nani believes Cristiano Ronaldo could call time on his illustrious career if he lifts the World Cup with Portugal in 2026.
Ronaldo, who turns 41 before the tournament, is currently under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr until 2027 but shows little sign of slowing down.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains driven to reach 1,000 career goals and is set to captain Portugal at next year’s European Championship.
Speaking to Covers.com, Nani said World Cup glory would be the perfect way for Ronaldo to end his career.
"I think this World Cup is very important for Cristiano Ronaldo. If he can play and win, that will be the perfect end to his career. That will be the time he says, 'I'm happy, I'm retired now. I'll just drink my coffee and my tea and have peace'," he said.
The former Manchester United star praised Ronaldo’s enduring motivation and leadership, saying his presence continues to inspire teammates.
"He’s motivated, you can see the way he’s been playing. He can score goals, and his presence on the field gives confidence to the team," Nani added.
Speculation has been mounting about what Ronaldo might do after hanging up his boots.
Rather than pursuing a coaching career, reports suggest the Portuguese icon may follow David Beckham’s path into club ownership in Major League Soccer (MLS).
Nani, who once played for Orlando City, believes Ronaldo has the charisma and influence to succeed in that venture.
"He is a superstar. Everyone knows Cristiano. In the MLS, it would be even better because people love superstars, the show, and goals, and he's the man for that. Could Cristiano Ronaldo become a club owner like David Beckham? I think Cristiano can do whatever he wants. Whatever he decides will be successful," he said.
Beckham, a fellow former Manchester United No. 7, currently co-owns Inter Miami, where Lionel Messi, Ronaldo’s long-time rival, plays and has recently extended his contract until 2028.
While Ronaldo has been encouraged to join the MLS to reignite his rivalry with Messi, he remains committed to developing football in Saudi Arabia.
However, a late-career return to his boyhood club, Sporting CP, has not been ruled out.
