FRSC, Police Dismiss Report of Fatal Crash Involving NYSC Members in Gombe

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has dismissed reports alleging that prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling to Gombe State were involved in a fatal road crash.

The NYSC orientation camp in Gombe opened earlier in the week, with new corps members expected to take their oath of service on Friday.

A viral post had suggested that 16 people were killed and two others critically injured in an accident said to have occurred en route to the camp.

But several checks by newsmen, including inquiries to security agencies and emergency responders, found no evidence to support the claim.

Janet Kassa, the FRSC Public Relations Officer in Gombe, said there was nothing to indicate that such an incident took place.

I have checked with my colleagues; there is no indication this happened in Gombe, not to mention that it even occurred.

I have placed a series of calls across units and commands to authenticate the report, but there is no sign. This may be one of those posts to get comments and views,” she said.

Kassa added that the corps would provide updates if any credible information emerged.

Similarly, the spokesperson for the Gombe State Police Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, said officers had found no trace of the alleged crash.

We are still investigating to know, but as I speak from morning till now, no new findings.

In the reports circulated, there was no mention of the hospital where the others were deposited or the proper address,” he said.

The NYSC’s Public Relations Officer in the state, Jennifer Laha, also dismissed the images being circulated online, describing them as questionable.

From the pictures I saw, it looked like Artificial Intelligence pictures, from misspellings and all that

Also, NYSC doesn’t give prospective corps members a bus to take to orientation camps,” she said.

She added that the scheme’s headquarters had not issued any official statement on the matter.
