Burna Boy has apologised to his fans after a backlash over comments suggesting he only valued supporters “who have money,” a controversy that has since been followed by the cancellation of two shows on his No Sign of Weakness Tour in the United States (US).
The Grammy-winning Nigerian artist, born Damini Ogulu, offered the apology earlier, acknowledging that the dispute had affected his public image and even his commercial ventures.
“I know my ticket sales are suffering since that incident. Even the coffee I introduced no one is buying. So please I am sorry to everyone and everything I said. It was a slip of tongue,” he said.
Recall that the apology came days after footage resurfaced of Burna Boy ordering security to eject a couple from his Denver concert for allegedly sleeping during his performance.
The woman later said the episode left her distressed, prompting renewed criticism across social media.
In a subsequent livestream, the singer dismissed questions raised by fans, saying: “Did I tell you all to be my fans? I am only looking for fans who have money this period,” a statement that intensified the criticism.
On Thursday, promoters announced the cancellation of two US tour dates: the 28 November show at the Armory in Minneapolis and the 1 December concert at the United Center in Chicago with no explanation given for the decision.
The Denver incident is not the first time the artist has faced scrutiny for his behaviour during live performances.
In separate episodes, he once kicked a male fan who ran onstage to embrace him and, on another occasion, ordered a spectator to leave for not dancing, neither of which drew an apology.
