Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has safely returned to Nigeria after being evacuated from Guinea-Bissau, where a military takeover disrupted the country’s electoral process.
Jonathan arrived at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday evening.
Footage from the airport showed him stepping off a Guinea-Bissau government aircraft as officials and supporters welcomed him.
He had been in the West African nation as head of the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission, monitoring presidential and legislative elections held last Sunday.
His delegation was still carrying out its duties when soldiers announced they had seized control of the government.
Following reports that Jonathan was stranded, the House of Representatives called on the federal government to intervene diplomatically to ensure his safety.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed his evacuation, with spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa stating, “Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau. He left on a special flight with members of his delegation, including Mohamed Chambas.”
On Wednesday, Guinea-Bissau’s military declared a takeover, suspended the electoral process, and said it would govern “until further notice.”
The Nigerian government has pledged to work with international partners to restore constitutional governance and stability in the country.
