Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has called for mandatory lie detector tests for all Nigerian politicians, arguing that anyone linked to kidnapping, terrorism or ransom dealings should be barred from contesting public office.
In an X (formally Twitter) post on Thursday, he said such tests should be conducted by an international organisation to ensure credibility and strengthen accountability within the political class.
Meanwhile, armed bandits reportedly abducted a 16-year-old boy and six young women during a night raid on Gidan-Bijimi in Kawu Ward, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Residents said the attack began shortly before 10 pm on Wednesday in the border community, which links Abuja to Kaduna State through Marke village.
A resident, Suleiman Shuaibu, explained the gunmen arrived heavily armed and targeted two houses.
“The bandits wielding AK-47 rifles raided two houses around 9:47 pm and whisked away six young girls, including a 16-year-old boy. There was heavy shooting and people fled in panic,” he said.
He added that local vigilantes attempted to repel the attackers but were outmatched.
“Some vigilantes tried to engage the bandits but were forced to run for cover because of the superior firepower,” he said, adding that the abducted girls were aged between 17 and 23, including a relative of his.
According to Shuaibu, residents began fleeing the community overnight, and no contact had been made with the abductors as of Thursday morning.
Also, efforts to reach the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh by newsmen were said to be unsuccessful.
The incident occurred less than two days after the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, ordered heightened security across the capital, directing security agencies to reinforce surveillance at all borders and entry points.
Following the directive, a joint military task force, comprising the police, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other agencies, was deployed across Abuja.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller G Dantawaye, urged operatives to work cohesively and said the minister had provided adequate logistics to support the operation.
Notably, authorities have yet to issue an official update on the abduction.
