A dramatic scene unfolded at an Area Court in Ilorin on Thursday when a woman, Mulikat Yusuf, collapsed moments after her husband, Ishaq Abdulganiyu, reaffirmed his decision to end their marriage.
The incident occurred during a divorce hearing in which Abdulganiyu told the court he was no longer willing to continue the union.
Yusuf, visibly distressed, had earlier pleaded with the court to halt the proceedings, citing her emotional and financial dependence on the marriage.
She told the court she had borne six children with Abdulganiyu and had no alternative support system.
Eyewitnesses reported that Yusuf appeared dazed as she exited the courtroom following her husband's declaration.
Moments later, she slumped outside the court premises, prompting immediate intervention from court staff who revived her by dousing her with water.
Presiding Judge Toyin Aluko addressed the emotional tension in the courtroom, urging Yusuf to consider reconciliation efforts before the next hearing.
Aluko stressed the importance of exploring peaceful resolution avenues, especially given the couple’s long history and shared responsibilities.
The case has been adjourned until December 10, when the court expects a report on any settlement efforts or will proceed with the hearing.
