UPDATED: Gov Diri, Other Lawmakers Resign from PDP

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State on Wednesday formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of speculation over his political future.

The governor announced his decision at an expanded State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Yenagoa, in the presence of Speaker of the House of Assembly Abraham Ingobere, Deputy Speaker Michael Ogbere, APGA minority leader Edward Brigidi, and seven other lawmakers.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri said the resignation followed "extensive consultation with leaders of the state" and was prompted by "very obvious reasons," though he did not disclose the specifics or the party he plans to join.

The full statement read:

"Today, I wish to address a matter that has been the subject of speculation and debate across party lines in Bayelsa State and beyond. We allowed the speculations. But while it lasted, we were also doing our consultation

"After extensive consultation, today the 15th day of October 2025, I wish to formally notify you that in keeping with the extant protocols, I Governor Douye Diri, do hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party.

"I am not resigning  alone as you can see. I am here with Mr. Speaker, Deputy Speaker and all the members of our party (in the Assembly) who are with me on this.

"So, today, I have formally resigned from the PDP for very obvious reasons."

Speaker Ingobere supported the governor’s decision, stating that the move had the backing of the majority of the 24-member Assembly.

"The governor is the leader of the political structure of the state, and we are aligned with him," he said.

Governor Diri also thanked his supporters for their loyalty, urging them to continue supporting the government as he works to build a "strong and virile Bayelsa."
