Two Schoolchildren Electrocuted During Rainstorm in Anambra

Two schoolchildren have died after being electrocuted during a heavy downpour at Nnewichi in Nnewi North Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State.

The tragic incident occurred at St Peter’s Claver Junction, where the victims, along with other pupils, had taken refuge in a roadside shop on the rain-soaked day.

Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage circulating online on Tuesday showed several children huddled inside the closed shop to escape the storm when the fatal accident happened.

According to residents, the wet bodies of the two minors reportedly came into contact with an exposed metal believed to have been charged with electricity.

"Several pupils were taking shelter at the roadside shop during the heavy rainfall. But tragedy struck when the wet bodies of two of the schoolchildren touched a live metal, and they were instantly electrocuted.

"Others narrowly escaped, including some bystanders, who were shocked at how quickly it all happened," an eyewitness said.

It was said that security personnel and passers-by later used protective gloves to retrieve the bodies.

Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident to newsmen but revealed investigations were ongoing.

"The facts are not clear, but the divisional police officer has been directed to find out the details for a comprehensive report. As soon as I get the details, I will get back to you," Ikenga stated.
