'Poverty Cannot Die by Fire Without Hard Work’ — Chiwetalu Agu

Veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, has cautioned Nigerians against believing that poverty can be eliminated through prayers alone, insisting that hard work remains the only path to lasting prosperity.

In a viral video shared on X,the actor dismissed the widespread notion that poverty can be "prayed away," stressing that divine intervention must be matched with personal effort.

"Poverty does not die by fire. I repeat, poverty cannot die by fire. Pray from now till tomorrow, if you don’t work hard, poverty will deal with you," Agu said.

He acknowledged the power of prayer, saying that it connects individuals to divine wisdom and favour, but maintained that blessings manifest only through diligence.

"Yes, prayer is powerful, it connects you to divine wisdom and favour, but work is the channel through which blessings manifest. You can pray all day for success, but if you refuse to plan or act, you will still remain poor. God blesses effort, not idleness," he added.

Agu urged Nigerians to abandon the belief in miraculous wealth without labour, advising them to embrace responsibility and discipline as prerequisites for success.

His comments have invited debate on social media, with many users reflecting on the balance between faith and work in overcoming economic hardship.
