Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has officially become the first footballer in history to reach billionaire status, according to new data published by Bloomberg.
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks the world’s wealthiest individuals, listed the 40-year-old Al-Nassr forward with an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion (£1.04 billion), marking the first time the football superstar has appeared on the global wealth ranking.
The valuation factors in Ronaldo’s career earnings, business ventures, and endorsement deals, revealing a financial empire that extends far beyond the pitch.
Between 2002 and 2023, Ronaldo reportedly earned more than $550 million (£410 million) in salaries alone, with a substancial portion coming from his stints at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus.
A major contributor to his fortune is his long-standing relationship with Nike, through a decade-long deal worth around $18 million (£13.4 million) annually.
Beyond football, Ronaldo’s brand portfolio includes his CR7 fashion line, hotels, fragrances, gyms, and a growing investment footprint in wellness and real estate.
His move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr in late 2022 further cemented his financial dominance. The deal, which made him the highest-paid player in football history, reportedly guarantees £177 million per year, and his recently extended contract, running beyond his 42nd birthday, is said to be worth over $400 million (£298 million).
Ronaldo’s long-time rival, Lionel Messi, follows closely behind in lifetime earnings, having accumulated more than $600 million (£447 million) in pre-tax salaries.
The Argentine and Inter Miami forward earns about $20 million (£15 million) annually and is expected to gain a stake in Inter Miami after retirement, according to Bloomberg.
