Twelve Killed in South Africa Late-night Mass Shooting

At least 12 people were killed and nine others wounded in a late-night mass shooting in Johannesburg, South African police said on Wednesday, in the latest deadly attack to hit the city.

Police said they believed more than 10 suspects were transported in a minibus to an informal settlement in the Cleveland area late on Tuesday night.

Once there, the attackers allegedly opened fire on residents at several locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.

In a statement, police said the gunmen "moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene."

The victims were identified as nine men and three women, saying eleven people died at the scene, while another later died in hospital.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday, and the motive for the attack remained unclear, however, Police said a manhunt was under way.

South Africa has witnessed a number of high-profile mass shootings in recent months, including two attacks in December that killed more than 20 people.

Some incidents, reports added, have involved multiple shooters.

Such shootings are sometimes linked to illegal mining gangs operating in and around Johannesburg.

Informal settlements in South Africa are typically unplanned residential areas made up of temporary structures, often lacking basic services and security.
