Rivers State will begin shutting down all unapproved private schools on Monday, 15 June 2026, in a statewide enforcement drive to raise education standards.
Education Commissioner, Dr Peters Nwagor confirmed the move in a public notice on Wednesday.
Nwagor said the clampdown will target schools operating without ministry registration and institutions that fail to meet minimum requirements.
The action, he noted, is backed by the Rivers State Private Schools Law and other regulations governing private education.
"The exercise is intended to ensure that children in Rivers State receive quality education in safe and conducive learning environments," Nwagor said.
Stakeholders have long raised alarm over the spread of unregistered schools using poor facilities and unqualified staff.

The commissioner said the crackdown would protect pupils by enforcing standards on infrastructure, staffing and teaching.
Approved school owners with unpaid annual renewal fees must settle arrears immediately.
Only schools with valid certificates and up-to-date records will be allowed to run, he warned.
Proprietors seeking guidance on registration were told to visit the State Quality Assurance Services office at Government Girls’ Secondary School, Rumuokwuta, Port Harcourt, or contact Director Dr Chinedu Wordu.
The Ministry said the exercise is part of ongoing reforms to improve learning outcomes and enforce best practices across Rivers.
