NiDCOM Welcomes Life Sentence for Killer of Two Young Nigerians in Canada

Nigeria's diaspora commission has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of the man found guilty of killing two young Nigerians in a nightclub shooting in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, nearly three years ago.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) issued a statement commending the outcome after the Ontario Court of Justice sentenced the offender to life imprisonment, with no eligibility for parole for 25 years.

He was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm.

The victims, Chibueze Momah and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, were killed on July 23, 2022.

Chibueze Momah was 22 years old at the time of his death and had recently graduated with a diploma in Computer Programming.

An only son of Ikechukwu Momah, Chibueze Momah had hoped to build a career in the technology sector and also reportedly  aspired to bring members of his family to Canada.

Amos-Arowoshegbe on the other hand, lost his life while working as a security personnel at the venue.

Both men were described by family, friends and colleagues as hardworking and ambitious.

NiDCOM stated that while no judicial outcome could restore the lives of the deceased or erase the pain endured by their families, the sentencing represented a great step towards accountability and justice.

The Commission's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hon Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had paid condolence visits to both bereaved families following the 2022 incident.

NiDCOM commended the law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities involved in the investigation, prosecution and eventual conviction of the offender, and acknowledged the resilience demonstrated by both families throughout the lengthy legal process.

The Commission maintained its commitment to the welfare and protection of Nigerians abroad and said it would continue to advocate for justice whenever Nigerian citizens were victims of crimes overseas.

It extended its condolences to the Momah and Amos-Arowoshegbe families.
