Bayelsa State Police have begun a sweeping enforcement operation targeting motorists driving unregistered vehicles or those with tampered, covered, or defaced number plates.
The operation, which started immediately, was ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and is being coordinated by Bayelsa’s Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor.
Police say the move is aimed at tightening public safety and cutting down on crime across the state.
The development follows growing trends of drivers deliberately obscuring registration plates.
Police warned that such acts violate Section 10(3) of the Road Traffic Act 2004 and Regulation 38 of the National Road Traffic Regulations 2012, which mandate that every vehicle must display clear, authentic number plates at all times.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed Anipr, vehicles without proper registration or with hidden plates create serious security risks.

Anipr stressed they make it harder to trace cars used in armed robbery, kidnapping, cult violence and other offences.
Motorists have been urged to ensure their vehicles are duly registered and that number plates remain visible and unaltered.
Moreso, the command said offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.
Edebor also issued a stern warning to officers, stating that any policeman caught extorting drivers or harassing motorists during the exercise will face disciplinary action.
Residents were advised to report misconduct to the Command Complaint Response Unit on 08143377442 or 08145733300.
Police appealed to all road users in Bayelsa to comply with traffic laws and support the operation.
