The Bayelsa State Police Command has debunked reports of panic across parts of the state on Friday, 5 June 2026, describing claims of a militant attack as false and baseless.
Commissioner of Police CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor said the alarm was triggered by a Facebook post from a user, Sen Promise Etete JP, alleging that "Militants Seize Bandits, Demand N50 Million Ransom per Captive in Bayelsa State."
The post spread quickly and caused alarm, with parents rushing to schools in Ogbunagha, Polaku and nearby areas to pick up their children.
In response, police deployed the School Protection Squad, tactical teams and the drone unit to Ogbuna, Pulaku, Sabagreia and Kaiama.

Officers carried out on-the-spot checks at Ijaw National Academy Kaiama, Gbarainowei Grammar School Okolobiri and Fun-Tari Academy Sabagreia, followed by confidence-building patrols.
"Normalcy has since been restored, and residents are going about their lawful businesses without hindrance, while monitoring continues," the command stated.
Police urged residents to ignore unverified reports and avoid sharing content that could incite panic.
Citizens were advised to rely on official channels for security updates.
