Amnesty International, on Thursday, condemned violent attacks on peaceful protesters in Ibadan, Oyo State, after demonstrators calling for an end to school abductions were assaulted on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.

The human rights group said a group, reportedly sponsored, disrupted a march organised by the Take It Back Movement as it moved from Mokola towards Bodija.

It said, the protest, held under the banner #BringBackOurPupilsAndTeachers, was aimed at drawing attention to the failure of authorities to protect children and schools from armed attacks.

According to Amnesty, the protesters were attacked at Sango area of Ibadan.

It stressed many were injured, vehicles were vandalised and personal belongings were taken.

The organisation described the assault as part of a wider pattern of state authorities allegedly using thugs to break up peaceful demonstrations.

"This pattern of state authorities sponsoring thugs to disrupt and attack peaceful protesters is increasingly undermining the right to peaceful assembly in Nigeria," it said.

The group called on the authorities to investigate the incident and ensure those responsible face fair trials.

It added that freedom of assembly is protected under Nigerian and international law, and any act that undermines it "is illegal and portrays unacceptable intolerance of peaceful dissent."
