Nigeria Strengthens Data Privacy Rules with New NDPC, BPP Agreement

Nigeria has taken another step to tighten data protection in public procurement after two federal agencies signed a cooperation agreement in Abuja on Thursday.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) designed to build stronger privacy safeguards into procurement processes and digital systems.

The deal was signed by the National Commissioner and Chief Executive of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, and the Director-General of the BPP, Adebowale Adedokun.

Under the partnership, the agencies will work to improve institutional capacity through specialised training programmes and certification for data protection officers.

BPP staff and registered vendors will also gain access to virtual privacy academy resources, with the aim of increasing compliance standards across government contracting.

A joint working group has been set up to oversee immediate implementation and monitor adherence to data protection requirements in procurement activities.

It was said that the collaboration will support wider efforts to improve transparency, accountability and digital governance in the public sector.

Representatives from both agencies said stronger privacy controls would help reduce risk, protect sensitive information and improve confidence among investors and international partners as Nigeria pushes ahead with digital economy reforms.
