Nigerian Army Chief Warns Troops on Social Media Use

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, has warned Nigerian Army personnel against the misuse of social media and other digital platforms.

Shaibu stated that unregulated online engagement could harm operational security and undermine the military’s integrity.

Speaking on Thursday at the closing ceremony of the first Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs)’ Convention 2026 in Kaduna, he said commanders must enforce responsible digital conduct and ensure strict compliance with communication protocols across all units.

The Army Chief urged regimental sergeant majors to lead by example and strengthen information discipline, adding that they should also intensify mentorship for younger soldiers to preserve regimental values and promote professional conduct.

According to Shaibu, effective mentorship is critical to building a motivated and combat-ready force.

He called on the RSMs to reinforce the warrior ethos as part of efforts to sustain combat power and improve operational effectiveness.

The convention was held under the theme "Empowering Regimental Sergeant Majors to Drive Combat Readiness and Professional Excellence."

Shaibu revealed the forum provided a platform for professional engagement and strategic discussion on leadership, mentorship and regimental standards.

Separately, the Nigerian Army Provost Marshal, Maj Gen Mathias Erebulu told military police personnel during a training session that soldiers who breach social media regulations would face punishment.

Erebulu directed commanders to return to their formations and remind troops of the consequences of social media abuse.

"Our soldiers have no business being on social media. When they go against the First Social Media Act, they are punished," he said.
