Chelsea slipped to a third consecutive Premier League defeat as a clinical second-half showing from Manchester City earned a 3–0 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
The Blues created the clearer chances before the interval but failed to capitalise, and they were made to pay after the restart as City struck three times to close ground on league leaders Arsenal.
Despite enjoying less of the ball in the opening period, Chelsea threatened repeatedly as Cole Palmer twice went close, while Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto both tested Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The home side thought they had taken the lead when Marc Cucurella finished from close range following a slaloming run by Joao Pedro, only for VAR to confirm the full-back had strayed narrowly offside.
City’s possession began to tell late in the first half, with Robert Sánchez called into action to deny Bernardo Silva and Rayan Cherki, but Chelsea reached the break level and with reason to feel encouraged.
That optimism evaporated quickly after the restart when Cherki delivered a precise cross and Nico O'Reilly rose above his marker to head City in front six minutes into the second half.

The visitors sensed vulnerability and doubled their lead soon after, Cherki again the provider as Marc Guéhi drove a composed finish into the far corner.
Chelsea attempted to respond, with Palmer seeing an effort deflected wide and Cucurella denied from close range, but the contest was effectively settled midway through the half.
Moises Caicedo was dispossessed deep inside his own half, allowing Jeremy Doku to break clear and slot home City’s third.
Liam Rosenior rang the changes in search of a lifeline, but City remained largely in control.
Sanchez prevented the scoreline from worsening with late saves, including a stop from Erling Haaland, while Donnarumma kept out a Palmer free-kick at the other end.
The result tightens the pressure on Chelsea after an afternoon that again underlined their lack of cutting edge, while Pep Guardiola’s side departed west London with three points earned through efficiency rather than dominance.
Chelsea now turn their attention to the second fixture of their Manchester double-header, hosting Manchester United at Stamford Bridge next Saturday evening.
