INEC Vows ‘Best Possible’ Election in 2027, but Rules Out Perfection

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan, has said the commission will work to deliver Nigeria’s “best possible” general election in 2027, while cautioning that a flawless process remains unrealistic.

Speaking on Sunday at a Citizens’ Town Hall on the Electoral Act 2026, Amupitan acknowledged widespread public expectations for a perfect election but urged Nigerians to be pragmatic about the limitations facing electoral management bodies.

He confirmed that INEC has the capacity to transmit results electronically and intends to do so in 2027, but raised questions over public demands for instantaneous, real-time transmission from every polling unit.

"INEC will strive as much as possible to give this country the best election. But we will not be able to achieve a 100 per cent perfect election for now.

"As far as electronic transmission of results is concerned, we have the capacity and we are going to transmit them. The only concern is real time — what exactly is real time?," he said.

Amupitan also assured participants that the commission is fully prepared to conduct a peaceful, credible and transparent poll, adding that voter awareness has improved greatly ahead of the next general election.

By the grace of God, the 2027 election will be the best Nigeria has ever had. The electorate is more aware and understands the direct correlation between elections and national development.

We want a process that guarantees legitimacy and builds confidence in the system. When people trust INEC and their leaders, the country will move forward,” be said.
