Eric Dane, the United States (US) actor best known for his roles in Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria has died at the age of 53, less than a year after revealing he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Dane, who starred as family patriarch Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, rose to international fame as Dr Mark Sloan, nicknamed “Dr McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy.
His family disclosed he died on Thursday afternoon following what they described as a “courageous battle” with ALS.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always,” a family statement said.
The California-born actor was diagnosed last year with ALS, the most common form of motor neurone disease (MND), and spent recent months raising awareness of the condition.
He is survived by his wife, actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
According to the statement, Dane spent his final days surrounded by friends and family.

His wife and daughters, it said, “were the centre of his world.” The family added that he “adored his fans” and was grateful for the support he received.
Beyond Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, Dane appeared as Jason Dean in Charmed and as Captain Tom Chandler in The Last Ship. His film credits included Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day and Burlesque.
ALS is a rare, degenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord responsible for muscle movement.
Over time, patients progressively lose the ability to speak, eat, walk and breathe independently.
Last summer, Dane spoke candidly about his diagnosis during an interview on Good Morning America, saying it left him “angry.”
He reflected on the prospect of leaving his children at a young age, saying that his own father had died when he was seven.
Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane made his television debut in The Wonder Years in 1993 before building a steady career in film and television.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and collaborators. Kim Raver, who played Teddy Altman on Grey’s Anatomy, recalled his “perfect comedic timing,” while Kevin McKidd posted a brief tribute on Instagram.
The creator of Euphoria, Sam Levinson, told Variety: “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend. Working with him was an honour. Being his friend was a gift.”
