Sinners Smashes Oscar Record with 16 Nominations

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, a blues-soaked vampire allegory rooted in America’s racial history, has rewritten Academy Awards history after securing a record 16 nominations, the highest ever for a single film.

The Warner Bros drama surpassed the long-standing mark of 14 nominations jointly held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land, earning recognition across the Academy’s top prizes as well as a broad sweep of technical categories.

The film is nominated for best picture and best director, with Michael B Jordan receiving his first Oscar nomination for best actor for a dual performance at the centre of the story.

Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo were recognised in the supporting categories, underlining the breadth of the Academy’s endorsement.

Sinners also featured prominently in technical fields including cinematography, editing and sound, while benefiting from the Academy’s newly introduced casting award.

Released in April 2025 after a delayed post-production schedule, Sinners blends supernatural genre elements with social commentary, using vampire mythology to explore themes of history, survival and cultural inheritance.

Critics have praised Coogler for continuing his trademark approach of pairing popular entertainment with pointed cultural reflection.

The record-breaking haul also reflects broader shifts within the Academy, both in its expanding categories and its growing openness to films that merge genre storytelling with political and historical allegory.

For Warner Bros, the achievement carries added significance as the studio prepares for its proposed sale to Netflix, making Sinners a landmark not only creatively but corporately during a period of industry upheaval.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

It is said that the event will be broadcast live on ABC and Hulu, with Conan O’Brien returning as host.
