The United States (US) has delivered what it described as “critical military supplies” to Nigeria, deepening defence cooperation between the two nations.
The handover took place in Abuja, according to a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
AFRICOM disclosed the forms part of ongoing collaboration with Nigeria and is intended to bolster the country’s counterterrorism efforts.
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja,” the command wrote.
It added that the support “emphasises our shared security partnership” and is aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s ongoing operations.
The post also tagged the US Mission in Nigeria, @USinNigeria, suggesting Washington’s continued engagement with Abuja on military and security matters.
Notably, the development comes just months after President Bola Tinubu’s administration formally appealed to the United States for direct military assistance in combating terrorism in parts of Nigeria.
In November 2025, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga made the appeal public while responding to Washington’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious freedom violations.
The Nigerian government rejected the designation, describing it as unfounded.
It also dismissed comments by US President Donald Trump, who had cited reports of widespread killings of Christians in Nigeria as justification for the label.
Trump later confirmed that US forces had conducted airstrikes on terrorist targets in Sokoto State, in Nigeria’s northwest.
While details of the latest military supplies remain undisclosed, the delivery is likely to be viewed as a tangible response to Nigeria’s request for greater international support in its fight against insurgency and violent extremism.
The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official statement on the delivery.
