Fresh Questions Raised over Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Twin Son

Fresh details have emerged surrounding the death of the 21-month-old son of acclaimed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, after a brief illness while the family was in Lagos during the Christmas holidays.

The child, identified as Nkanu Nnamdi, reportedly became unwell after developing an infection.

Sources familiar with the circumstances said arrangements had already been concluded for a full medical evacuation abroad, with a specialist team scheduled to transfer him to the United States (US) for further treatment on 7 January.

According to the sources, Nkanu was taken to a private medical facility in Victoria Island, Lagos, on 6 January, primarily to undergo medical tests requested by the overseas medical team.

He was said to have arrived at the hospital in a stable condition, however, before the planned evacuation could take place, his condition deteriorated.

Individuals close to the family have raised questions about the medical care provided in the hours preceding his death, alleging that it fell short of expected standards and querying whether established clinical protocols were fully observed.

One source, reflecting the views of those raising questions, said the outcome may have been avoidable if appropriate care had been provided during the critical period.

The family has not issued a public statement beyond requesting privacy as they mourn.
