Five students of the Rivers State University (RSU) have been rescued unharmed after a coordinated security operation in Emohua, Rivers State.
The victims, Prince London, Azubuike Kelechukwu, Elizabeth Aniete, Onyebuchi Precious and London Sampson, were seized from their isolated lodgings in Rumuche/Rumuohia at about 1 am on 3 December.
Police said the abductors moved them to Rumuodogo 2, a neighbouring community, before security teams closed in.
According to the Rivers State Police Command, officers, in collaboration with sister agencies and local community leaders, traced the suspects to the hideout where the victims were being held.
The gang fled moments before the team arrived, leaving behind what investigators described as “vital leads,” including a suspected insider already in custody.
Preliminary findings point to suspected cultists as masterminds of the abduction a view shared by community leaders, who maintained the attackers were not unfamiliar faces.
The Youth President of Rumuohia said early intelligence linked the attack to youths from Rumuodogo 1 and 2, allegedly working with a resident of Rumuohia.
Fortunately, the suspect, according to the Youth President, was promptly handed over to police.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, community representatives confronted the leadership of Rumuodogo and issued a 3 pm ultimatum for the captives to be released, a move many locals believe accelerated the rescue effort.
Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, praised the rapid collaboration between residents and security agencies, warning the fleeing suspects that the command “will not rest until all those responsible are arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
Adepoju urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information to aid ongoing investigations.
He disclosed that the freed students have undergone medical checks as police continue the hunt for the remaining members of the gang.
The Rivers State Police Command reiterated that public safety remains its priority and encouraged residents to go about their lawful activities.
