NAFDAC Destroys Over N5bn Worth of Substandard Products in 5 States

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed seized substandard and unwholesome products valued at more than N5 billion in five states.

It was said that the destroyed items, confiscated from Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger and Plateau states, were set ablaze on Thursday at the Angwan Rere dumpsite in Lafia.

According to NAFDAC, the operation was carried out to prevent dangerous goods from re-entering circulation.

Its Director-General, Prof Christianah Adeyeye, represented at the event by the agency’s North-Central Zonal Director, Kenneth Azikiwe said the products were impounded during routine monitoring exercises aimed at curbing the sale of harmful goods.

Adeyeye explained that the haul included fake, expired and adulterated items, some of which had been voluntarily surrendered by traders.

She urged Nigerians to report manufacturers and distributors of counterfeit products, stressing that the agency’s mandate to safeguard public health remained uncompromising.

NAFDAC will not rest on its oars. We will continue to enforce regulations to ensure only quality and safe products reach consumers nationwide,” she said.

Adeyeye added that all NAFDAC-regulated products must be stored and distributed in line with Good Distribution and Storage Practices, to guarantee their safety until they reach end-users.

Nasarawa State Commissioner for Security and Safety Matters, Usman Baba, commended the agency for its sustained market surveillance operations, pledging the state government’s continued support to strengthen enforcement and protect residents from hazardous goods.
