Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has defended the presence of his sons on both local and foreign trips.
Wike made the clarification on Monday during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, saying he has every right to travel with them and that the experience is part of their exposure to governance and public service.
His comments followed online criticism over viral photos showing his sons accompanying him on official engagements, including a recent summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"What law says that my sons shouldn’t travel? Let the FCT say where they paid N1. What official matter? Did they sign any document? It doesn’t need to be a personal trip. I can travel with anybody from the FCT. I can travel with anybody in Nigeria. I have that right," he said.
The former Rivers State governor explained that his sons, both master’s degree holders, needed exposure to the workings of government.
"They have to know how Nigeria is. They have to learn about government," he said.
When asked whether he was grooming them for political life, Wike dismissed the notion. "No, that’s not correct. My first son is a lawyer. He said, ‘No, I’m not going to practise. I want to be a farmer.’ They’ve gone for training in Spain and Lisbon. My second son finished from King’s College with a master’s degree in Economics. He said he wants to be in real estate," he said.
According to the Minister, his children had not brought him embarrassment due to their conduct and discipline.
"I’m so happy that I have children who have given me comfort, who have not given me problems. Assuming they were somewhere smoking, you would have said, ‘Oh, look at these children now.’ I will not travel with my enemy’s children," he said.
