Troops of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Lokoja, have rescued two kidnapped victims and recovered N3.8 million ransom meant for their release during a military operation in Kogi State.
The operation, according to a statement issued on Monday by the Brigade Spokesperson, Lt Hassan Abdullahi, took place on Sunday in Achigili Forest along the Itobe–Adumu–Ejule road.
Abdullahi said the troops, deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Oguma, acted on credible intelligence about kidnapping activities and a planned ransom delivery to secure the release of the victims on November 2.
"Troops acted swiftly on the information and projected a patrol to Achigili Forest to intercept the bandits. However, while en route to the location, the troops came under fire from the criminals," he said.
The statement added that the soldiers engaged the bandits in a fierce exchange of gunfire, forcing them to flee into the forest with gunshot wounds, abandoning the two victims and the ransom cash.
"The rescued victims were immediately debriefed to aid further operations, while the recovered N3.8 million was returned to them," Abdullahi said.
He added that the victims, a man and a woman, were in safe custody at the military location and would be handed over to relevant authorities.
"They are currently in safe custody at the troops’ location pending handover to the appropriate authorities," he added.
