Tinubu Departs on Two-nation Visit for G20, AU–EU Summits

President Bola Tinubu will today begin a two-country visit to South Africa and Angola, where he is expected to participate in high-level global and continental summits aimed at strengthening cooperation on development, climate action and economic transformation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu’s first stop would be Johannesburg for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit, before proceeding to Luanda for the African Union (AU)–European Union (EU) meeting.

The G20 gathering, scheduled for 22–23 November at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, is the first to be hosted on African soil.

Under the theme "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability," leaders will meet to discuss inclusive growth, debt and development finance, disaster-risk reduction, climate action, energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and labour issues.

Tinubu, invited by South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa in his capacity as G20 Chair, is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the margins of the summit in alignment with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The African Union, now a full member of the G20 alongside the European Union, will also participate.

Following the Johannesburg summit, the President will travel to Luanda for the AU–EU summit from 24–25 November, where Heads of State, innovators and civil society groups will deliberate on climate resilience, inclusive development, infrastructure, digital transformation, the creative economy, manufacturing and agribusiness.

He will be accompanied by senior government officials, including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance and the Economy, Solid Minerals, Trade and Investment, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu is expected back in the country at the end of the meetings.

Notably, the visit is his third trip to South Africa since taking office, while Luanda will be his first official stop in Angola as President.
