Senate Announces Passing of Enugu North Senator Okey Ezea

The Senate on Wednesday announced the death of Senator Okey Ezea, the Labour Party (LP) legislator who represented Enugu North Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly.

The announcement was issued by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, who cited an earlier communication from the late senator’s family.

Ezea, elected in 2023, was described as a steadfast member of the Labour Party and a prominent voice in Senate debates.

At the start of the current Assembly, he chaired the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions before taking up further leadership roles as Vice Chairman of the Committees on Housing and Urban Development; Cooperation and Integration in Africa and NEPAD; and Culture and Creative Economy.

He was known for his legislative advocacy, including sponsoring the bill seeking to establish the Federal College of Agriculture in Adani.

He also championed the longstanding call for the creation of Adada State, a campaign colleagues said he pursued with unwavering commitment.

Ezea raised several motions during his time in the chamber, among them a call for the establishment of a military base in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State, following repeated deadly attacks in the area.

Outside the Senate, he held various public service roles, notably serving as Chairman of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jalingo, Taraba State.

In his statement, Adaramodu said the upper chamber mourned alongside the people of Enugu North, the wider Enugu State community and the late senator’s family, offering prayers for his repose.
