Presidency Accuses Turaki of ‘High Treason’ for Seeking Trump’s Intervention

The Presidency on Tuesday accused Tanimu Turaki, the newly declared factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of committing "high treason" after he publicly urged United States (US) President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria’s political affairs amid a deepening crisis within the opposition party.

Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, made the accusation in a post on X, where he shared a video of Turaki appealing to Trump to "save democracy in Nigeria" during a clash at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja.

"We shall never forget this video: the day a Nigerian politician committed high treason for calling for a foreign invasion of Nigeria, all because of an intra-party dispute," Onanuga wrote.

Turaki, who emerged over the weekend as the factional chairman of the PDP, made the call during a confrontation between rival party groups that descended into chaos at the secretariat on Tuesday.

In the video, he claimed that Nigerian democracy was under imminent threat and appealed to the international community to intervene.

"I want to call on President Trump. What is at stake is not just Christian genocide; he should come and save democracy in Nigeria

"Democracy is under threat. I’m calling on all other developed nations to come and save democracy in Nigeria," he said.

He also accused Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike of leading thugs "with the connivance of the police" to cause disorder at the party headquarters.

Recall that The PDP has been engulfed in a leadership row, with two factions laying claim to the party’s top office.

The dispute escalated on Tuesday when supporters of both camps clashed outside the secretariat, prompting heavy police presence.
