No Plot to Impeach Godswill Akpabio – Senate

The Nigerian Senate has dismissed reports suggesting plans to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio, describing the claims as baseless and aimed at stirring unnecessary tension within the legislature.

Speaking during plenary in Abuja, the Senate Leader clarified that no such discussions or moves had taken place, insisting that senators remain united under Akpabio’s leadership.

He explained that comments earlier attributed to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu were taken out of context, adding that his conversation with the Abia North lawmaker confirmed the statement was misrepresented.

"From my discussions with Senator Kalu, it was obvious that the statement attributed to him was misrepresented," the Senate Leader said.

He warned that spreading false information could distract lawmakers from urgent national priorities, stressing that the Senate had adopted a "zero-tolerance" stance toward political distractions.

"There is no tension in this Senate. We are focused on delivering for Nigerians, and we will not allow rumours to derail our work," he said.

The clarification was officially noted in the proceedings, with senators announcing their confidence in Akpabio and pledging continued support for his leadership.

Meanwhile, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu on Monday acknowledged that there had been an attempt to unseat Akpabio but said it was quickly contained.

"There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We are one big family, and it’s not going to happen," the former Abia State governor told journalists in Abuja.

Kalu attributed the reported rift to what he called a "family misunderstanding," adding that the Senate remained stable and cohesive.

On the economy, Kalu admitted that Nigerians were facing hardship but stared that ongoing government efforts would yield results.

"As a businessman, I am feeling the pain too. The macro economy is doing well, but the micro economy is not.

"Foreign investors are coming in. What is left is for this progress to trickle down so people can eat daily and return to farming," he said.

The senator further maintained that both President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly were working to revive the economy and strengthen food security.

Responding to a question on Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s political prospects, Kalu said he expected the governor to eventually join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

"I think after all the court cases, he is a progressive like myself, President Tinubu, and the Senate President. Soludo has no other alternative than to come and join us," he said.

Kalu also disclosed that President Tinubu would win a second term, saying, "The president currently has no real opposition."
