DNA: Mohbad's Family Bars Widow from Using 'Aloba' Name

The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has formally directed his widow, Wunmi, to stop using the ‘Aloba’ surname until a DNA test confirms the paternity of her son, Liam.

In a statement issued on Monday and jointly signed by the Head of the Aloba family, Adedara Aloba, and the Principal member, Joseph Aloba, the family said the decision was taken to "ensure that justice is served, the truth uncovered, and those responsible held accountable."

To manage the affairs of the late singer’s estate, the family announced the appointment of three administrators, Samuel Ajewole Aloba, Engineer Ayodele Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Mrs Alonge Ibukun Oluwaseun Aloba.

One position, however, has been reserved for Mohbad’s widow, Miss Cynthia Wunmi Adebanjo, pending lawful confirmation of her son’s paternity.

"These administrators are authorised to immediately apply for Letters of Administration from the Probate Registry to lawfully manage all estate assets, including royalties, bank holdings, real and personal property, and musical intellectual property," the statement read.

The family also instructed the appointed administrators to recover and protect all royalties, earnings, and intellectual-property rights belonging to the late singer.

Clarifying the marital status between Mohbad and his partner, the statement added:

"For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Cynthia Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites, including the payment of bride price, were never completed."

While acknowledging that an introduction ceremony had taken place and that marriage plans were underway, the family maintained that Wunmi should cease using the ‘Aloba’ name until the DNA test is concluded and approved by the family.

"Nonetheless, if the DNA test confirms that Liam is Mohbad’s son, the family will recognise both mother and child within the estate-administration process," the statement added.

The Aloba family further announced the appointment of Oladayo Ogungbe, Esq., of Ogungbe & Ogungbe Attorneys, as the sole legal representative for all matters concerning the DNA test and estate affairs.

It also stated that Dr Wahab Shittu, SAN, would continue to represent the family in all communications with investigative authorities regarding the ongoing inquiry into Mohbad’s death.

The family concluded that a new burial date and memorial plan for the late artiste would be announced after the completion of all legal and internal processes surrounding the DNA issue.
