Messi Headlines MLS Best XI After Record-Breaking Season

Lionel Messi has been named among Major League Soccer’s Best XI players for the 2025 season, following a remarkable campaign that saw him lead the league in both goals and assists.

The Inter Miami captain, who clinched his eighth Ballon d’Or earlier this year, netted 29 goals and provided 19 assists, becoming only the second player in MLS history to top both charts in the same season.

Messi was joined in the forward line by Los Angeles FC’s Denis Bouanga of Gabon and San Diego FC’s Anders Dreyer of Denmark.

Minnesota United’s Dayne St Clair earned the goalkeeper spot after being named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, while the defensive lineup featured Vancouver’s Tristan Blackmon, Orlando City’s Alex Freeman, and Philadelphia Union duo Jakob Glesnes of Norway and Kai Wagner of Germany.

In midfield, Vancouver’s Sebastian Berhalter, Cincinnati’s Evander of Brazil, and Seattle Sounders’ Cristian Roldan rounded out the selection.

Six players, St Clair, Blackmon, Freeman, Roldan, Berhalter, and Dreyer earned their first-ever inclusion in the MLS Best XI, reflecting a wave of fresh talent emerging across the league.
