Lagos Govt Demolishes Over 200 Shanties, Others

The Lagos State Government has demolished more than 200 illegal shanties and dismantled several criminal hideouts located beneath the Costain, Ijora, and Apapa Road bridges in a sweeping cleanup operation.

The exercise, coordinated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, involved multiple agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), and the Nigeria Police Force.

Officials said the operation was part of the state’s broader efforts to reclaim public spaces, restore environmental order, and curb criminal activity along key transport corridors.

During the demolition, LASTMA operatives reportedly uncovered a dummy gun and other weapons concealed beneath the Costain Bridge.

The agency's Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the discovery in a statement on Friday, revealing that the items were hidden inside makeshift shelters used by suspected criminals.

Giwa, who supervised the operation, described the condition of the affected areas as "a monumental affront to public decency and order," stressing that no responsible government would allow such lawlessness to persist around vital infrastructure.

He said the clearance also targeted long-abandoned trucks and unauthorised garages in the Ijora area that had become criminal hideouts.

"Our goal is to eliminate spaces that encourage traffic robberies, drug dealing, and environmental nuisance," Giwa said, adding that the Sanwo-Olu administration was determined to maintain the momentum of urban renewal across the state.

He further warned that any illegal occupants attempting to return to the cleared sites would face "swift and decisive sanctions."

Giwa praised the collaboration among the participating agencies and urged residents to support the government’s commitment to building a safer, cleaner, and more habitable Lagos.
