Panic swept through Papiri in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State on Friday morning after terrorists stormed St Mary’s Papiri Private Catholic Secondary School, abducting an unknown number of students and staff.
Local sources described the assault as a coordinated operation that unfolded between 2:00 am and 3:00 am.
Ahmed Abdullahi Rofia, Head of Disaster and Relief for Agwara Local Government, confirmed the attack, alongside Bello Gidi, media aide to the local government chairman.
“Yes, it’s true that bandits have kidnapped students and teachers at St. Mary’s Papiri,” Gidi said.
He added that the school, which educates both boys and girls, had reportedly lost more than 100 individuals.
Eyewitnesses told newsmen that the attackers abducted “more than a dozen” children, while leaving behind chaos and fear within the community.
Niger State Police Public Relations Officer Wasiu Abiodun disclosed that efforts were ongoing to confirm the scale of the incident.
The attack occurred shortly after students began their morning routines, with sporadic gunfire reportedly fired across the school compound, injuring a school guard.
Recall that the incident comes just five days after terrorists raided the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting around 25 female students and killing at least one staff member.
