Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against holding a diplomatic meeting with US President Donald Trump, claiming such engagement could lead to a "verbal and savage assault" on Nigeria’s leader.
Speaking during the 2025 Law Week celebration of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Akure Branch, Fani-Kayode described the proposed meeting as "baffling" and "dangerous," alleging that Trump’s underlying motives were to provoke religious conflict and exploit Nigeria’s natural resources.
"This is not diplomacy; it’s a direct threat to our sovereignty," he declared, in a speech titled 'Bow to God and Not to Trump.'
The former minister's comments come after Trump reportedly ordered the US Department of War to prepare for action in Nigeria, citing alleged persecution of Christians.
In response, presidential aide Daniel Bwala announced that Tinubu and Trump would soon meet to address claims of a "Christian genocide" in the country.
Fani-Kayode, however, urged Tinubu to reject any dialogue or negotiation with militant groups, insisting that terrorism in Nigeria targets all faiths and must be crushed with decisive force.
"The solution is for our leadership and Armed Forces to summon the resolve to ruthlessly wipe out Islamist terrorists and foreign militias once and for all. The world wants to see concrete action, not empty promises or tired platitudes," he said.
He further accused Western powers of creating and financing global terrorist organisations.
"They created Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram, Al-Shabaab, they fund and support them to destabilise countries like ours. Yet, despite it all, Nigeria stands firm and united. We will fight this menace to its logical conclusion," he said.
Earlier, NBA Akure Branch Chairman, Friday Umar, urged lawyers to uphold the integrity of the judiciary and strengthen the rule of law, calling for a "people-centric, efficient and accessible" justice system.
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by Attorney-General Kayode Ajulo, described the legal profession as "the backbone of civilisation" and "the bedrock of democracy," praising the Bar and Bench for their contributions to governance, social order, and economic stability.
